About Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda

Ayurveda means Science of Life and is the ancient healing system of India. It’s origins go back thousands of years but its application is as relevant today as it’s ever been.

Principles of Ayurveda

The philosophy of Ayurveda is built on the principle of the five elements which are earth, water, fire, air and space. In various combinations they form the three functional entities of the body– Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We are all made up of these three Doshas but in different ratios. For example, naturally large people have more earth and water which makes up Kapha Dosha and naturally small framed people have more air and space which makes up Vata Dosha. Fiery and ambitious people tend to have lots of Fire and Water which makes up Pitta Dosha.

When the Doshas are in balance, there is good health. When out of balance, disease sets in.

Almost everyone has toxins or Aama in their bodies and this is one of the main causes of Dosha imbalance. To bring about a better state of health Ayurveda makes use of a wide variety of techniques and treatments such as herbs, foods, massage and yoga to clear the body of Aama and bring the Doshas back into balance.

What you can expect

An Ayurvedic practitioner can help you find out your Prakruti or Individual Constitution. From this knowledge of Prakruti, a diet and lifestyle that will optimise your health is recommended

A thorough examination using both traditional diagnostic techniques (e.g. Pulse and Tongue) and modern clinical methods is carried out to establish the best line of treatment. The approach will include dietary and lifestyle advice, herbs and a range of therapies.
