BWY Hatha Yoga Pradipika Module

This 6 day training programme is designed to take you deep into the teachings of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (HYP).

Many students and even teachers of Yoga found this text quite mystifying in its depiction of Yoga life and though many of the practices have inspired and informed a new global movement in Yoga, many of the classical tenets of the practice have been lost. This Module is an opportunity to become familiar with many classical yoga practices including the classical Asanas, Pranayama, Mudra, Bandha and some key meditation techniques as taught by the Bihar School of Yoga that are inspired by the tantric practices that the HYP is based on.

The course is ideal for BWY Certificate students who wish to generate evidence to gain credit towards a full Diploma. The credit would not be automatically awarded but would be recognised as prior learning for gaining credit. The course is also useful for existing Yoga teachers who want to refresh their knowledge of the HYP they left gathering dust on their bookshelves after graduating.

By the end of the course, students should be able:

Generate valid and sufficient evidence to apply for credit towards a full Level 4 Diploma.

Discuss their understanding of the historical and social context in which the HYP was written.

Be familiar with the role of Asana, Pranayama, Mudra and Bandha from an HYP perspective.

Be familiar with the basic principles of Samkhya philosophy and references to Ayurvedic principles in the text.

Explain the purpose of the Hatha Yoga Pradipika as a whole and give a brief summary of the content of the four chapters.

Summarise the historical and social backdrop of the period in which the HYP was written and relate the text to others from the same period, namely the Gheranda Samhita, Goraksha Samhita, the Shiva Samhita and the Yogaratnavali.

Explain the purpose of Asana from an HYP perspective and critically appraise this view.

Explain the purpose of Shatkarmas and how they relate to Hatha Yoga and Ayurveda.

Explain the purpose of Mudra and Bandha from an HYP point of view and compare this to the context of how Mudra and Bandha are taught today.
